Meghna in the war of liberation

In the bloody days of 1971, different areas of Comilla were liberated by the joint attack of Mukti and the Allied forces. The Chandina area was liberated on 4 December. On the same day, the Mukti Bahini and the Allied forces launched a joint operation against the invaders. On the night of December 3, the freedom fighters blew up a wooden bridge on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The operation was conducted in greater Comilla under the leadership of Major General RD Bihar of the 23rd Mound Division of the Allied Forces. An Allied tank fleet arrives in Chandina. The assailants left Chandina that night and fled to Comilla cantonment. Gradually different groups of freedom fighters started advancing towards different villages of Chandina. Meanwhile, an Allied tank convoy was on its way from Debidwar to Dhaka on Chandina Road when an exchange of fire took place with the freedom fighters due to a misunderstanding in Mohanpur area. On this day, the people and the freedom fighters of Chandina celebrated 'Joybangla' with the flag of independent Bengal. Till noon, thousands of people shook the Upazila Sadar in triumph.

The people of the area had to pay a heavy price from the beginning of the liberation war as the then main army camp of East Pakistan was near Comilla Mainamati Cantonment. Within just five days of the declaration of independence, that is, on 31 March, the glorious chapter of snatching victory in the face-to-face battle with the enemy forces outside the divisional city, including the capital, began to take shape from the very beginning.
